Open Wheel Run Groups

The Open Wheel Division consists of three competition classes designed to group vehicles with similar performance characteristics. All vehicles must pass technical inspection and comply with the rules outlined within this section. Classes are Open Cup, Apex Cup and Clubman Cup. 

Open Cup

The Open Cup is intended for the fastest and highest-performance open-wheel and sports racer vehicles.

Eligible Vehicles

The following classes are automatically eligible:

  • Formula Atlantic

  • Hyper X Racer

  • Radical SR8

Vehicles not classified within the Apex Cup or Clubman Cup may be eligible for the Open Cup at the discretion of the Chief Technical Inspector following a complete technical inspection.

Vehicle Requirements

  • Vehicles must remain substantially compliant with their original class specifications.

  • The Chief Steward reserves the right to approve or deny participation based on vehicle performance and safety.

Tires

The approved competition tire is the Hoosier tire utilizing the original class maximum tire sizes.

The following compounds are permitted:

  • Hoosier R20

  • Hoosier R35A

  • Hoosier R60

  • Any Hoosier class-specific homologated tire (example: FE2 specification tire)

  • Street tires are also permitted.

  • Non-Hoosier tires are also permitted; however, they are not eligible for contingency awards.


Apex Cup

The Apex Cup is designed for modern formula and prototype-style race cars with moderate horsepower and weight characteristics.

Eligible Vehicles

The following classes are automatically eligible:

  • F1000

  • FE2

  • Formula Mazda (FM)

  • Formula Continental (FC)

  • Radical SR3

Vehicle Requirements

Vehicles must maintain compliance with their original class regulations.

Alternative body panel materials may be utilized provided that:

  • The vehicle does not weigh less than its original class minimum operating weight.

  • All other safety requirements remain unchanged.

Additional Eligible Vehicles

Vehicles not listed above may be approved for competition provided they meet both of the following criteria:

  • Minimum operating weight greater than 1,000 pounds

  • Manufacturer-rated horsepower less than 205 HP

Final approval is subject to technical inspection.

  • Hoosier R35A

  • Hoosier R60

  • Any Hoosier class-specific homologated tire (example: FE2 specification tire)

Clubman Cup

The Clubman Cup is intended for lower horsepower, non-winged open cockpit race cars emphasizing driver skill and close competition.


Eligible Vehicles

The following classes are automatically eligible:

  • Formula Ford

  • Spec Racer Ford (SRF)

Other non-winged open cockpit race cars may be eligible upon review by the Chief Technical Inspector. Competitors requesting classification should submit complete vehicle specifications prior to registration.

Spec Tire is Nankang, 185/60R13 front, 205/60R13 rear.

COMPETITOR ELIGIBILITY RULES

    • All competitors MUST have a NASA or SCCA racing license OR be approved by the PODIUM CLUB GT Academy - Other licenses may be acceptable, please inquire via info@southwestspeedfestival.com

    Qualification (20 minutes)

    Race 1 (20 Minutes)

    Race 2 (20 Minutes)


    Saturday

    Race 3 (20 Minutes)

    Race 4 (20 Minutes)

    Race 5 (25 Minutes)

    BONUS Race (Night)


    Sunday

    Race 6 (20 minutes)
